Read Our Story

From Humble beginnings in the suburbs of Houston to our brick and mortar shop in Deep East Texas, Apothecary Fabrics is a home-grown fabric shop. Learn more about us and our small-town values.

How We Began

Apothecary Fabrics was born in the dining room of our home in Kingwood, Texas.

In 2014, my husband purchased a sewing machine for me and, like any good procrastinator worth her salt, I let the box sit unopened for a few years wondering why he bought it for me in the first place as I had never even performed one single stitch.

Fast forward a few years later, I worked up the gumption to unbox the thing and plopped it on our dining room table. I couldn't find a pre-made costume for what my boy-child wanted to be for Halloween (a car wash... not kidding) so I was determined to make him one.

As you might have guessed, creating a handmade car wash costume was a bit out of my league at that point so I made him a hand-stitched key chain instead. Luckily, he was appeased.

My Love Affair with Fabrics Began

After I realized that sewing was not something outside of my skillset, I began hunting for fabrics.

The box stores had a wide array but I didn't love the feel of their textures against my skin so I turned to the Internet for help. Like Aladdin discovering the hidden magic lamp, when I introduced myself to the designer fabric houses of Riley Blake, Art Gallery, and Poppie Cottons, I was beside myself. Sewing with these high-quality cotton wovens was like a dream.

I went absolutely bonkers.

Storing fabric on my shelves became the ultimate treasure hunt. I curated colors and patterns that you'd never guess would pair well together. I found that collecting different releases from these designers was something I loved to do.

At this point, I was teaching myself how to sew children's clothing from watching YouTube videos and scouring tips and tricks from various Facebook groups.

I also had more fabric at this point than I could stitch up.

Then... I discovered quilting.

It was off to the races at that point. I decided to pair up with the fabric designers I adored in order to introduce other crafters to their high-end quilting fabrics.

I opened up an Etsy shop and began selling designer fabric by the half yard, offering same-day shipping (if it was ordered before the mail ran) or the next business day if it was not.

When 2020 rolled around, I was fulfilling 20+ orders a day and had literally created a full-time job for myself out of the house. It was banana town.

I steadily curated more fabric and began offering sewing and quilt patterns as well. The room I was using as my home-based shop was getting more and more congested and I quickly outgrew the space.

The Big Move

In March of 2025, we opened up our yearly tax and Homeowner's insurance bills and almost fainted. I remember yelling, "WE'RE MOVING!" and my husband agreed.

60 days later we were transporting everything we owned in the world into a building located on Main Street in the rural, deep east Texas town of Groveton.

It literally happened that fast. We took the risk and decided to upend our lives in the suburbs for the slower pace that country living had to offer.

Best decision we've ever made.

Our New Life

Our brick and mortar flagship store is coming into being and we are learning how to enjoy everything this precious community has to offer.

We welcome you to come and see us next time you're out this way. I'm still curating the collections I love and offering unique gift ideas in our boutique. This town is rich in Texas history and the Trinity County Courthouse located just outside is a sight to behold.

We look forward to growing our fabric and quilting shop and putting down deep roots here. We would love for you to be a part of our story!
