A few months ago, I awoke from a dream with a mission. I don't know where this dream came from but when I opened my eyes, I knew I needed to bring people together for a purpose to make Isolette quilts for NICU babies.

I plodded to my computer, coffee in hand, and began to research local hospitals. Immediately I found that Woodland Heights Hospital in Lufkin was the only Tier-3 NICU in a 90 mile radius. This meant they handled more intensive premature baby cases than the lower-tiered hospitals in the vicinity.

I contacted the NICU liason and immediately, she was ready to accept our quilts. We set up a quarterly distribution schedule and it was off to the races!

We had such buzz in the fabric shop about this endeavor and tons of people were interested! We began to offer 25% off of any fabric/notions that would be utilized for these NICU quilts. People were ready to donate their time and skill in sewing for our smallest community residents.

It's time to turn in our Q1 NICU Quilts and get them over to Woodland Heights! If you have yours ready, bring them over to the shop and I'll get them folded and packaged up! If you want more information about sewing for Q2 (Due in April) join our Woodland Heights NICU Quilters group.

Here are the best practices for our Isolette NICU quilts:

1. Blankets should measure approximately 36" x 36" (doesn't have to be exact)
2. Quilts should be made of 100% Cotton without any buttons or accessories that could pose a choking hazard.
3. Acrylic knitted/crochet blankets should be finished straight at the edge without fringe. (These styles can have a scalloped finished edge.)
4. These are going over the Isolettes during baby's stay, then home with the family as a keepsake. Each quilt/blanket should brighten up the room (i.e. don't use all black or "made for an adult" motifs if you can help it.)
5. We have agreed upon a quota of 45 blankets per quarter and will revisit those numbers as time progresses.
6. Bring your finished quilts to Apothecary Fabrics, 124 S Main St, Groveton, TX 75845.
7. We offer 25% off on fabric/notions used specifically on the NICU quilts. (Maximum purchase for discount is 3 yards per quilt.)
8. Quilts will be donated once a quarter (January, April, July, October)
